Workers’ Comp Complaint Site Popular

August 14, 2009

A Web site, which was started in Florida in June, has been exceedingly popular with residents and employees within the state. The site allows individuals to check whether their employers carry coverage for workers’ compensation insurance and make anonymous complaints if they do not.

By both state and federal laws, employers are required to offer their employees workers’ compensation insurance, so that in the event of an on-the-job accident or illness, they can receive paid medical leave. If an employer does not provide these benefits, they can be fined.

Because of the site, more than $526,000 in penalties has been assessed from more than 328 online referrals. State authorities have also been able to issue 36 separate stop-work orders, based on the tips given by site users.

Information about the site can be found on the state CFO’s Web site in the workers’ compensation section.
