New Jersey Paving Company Fails to Provide Workers’ Comp
July 17, 2009
A businessperson in New Jersey was recently indicted for failing to provide his employees with workers’ compensation protection. The man operated Accurate Paving, an unincorporated company, based in Lake Hopatcong, New Jersey. He has been charged with fourth-degree failure to provide workers’ compensation benefits.
In 2003, an employee of the company sustained a serious injury, which caused him to require surgery and a three-month stay in the hospital. Because the employee’s boss was unable to foot the bill for his medical expenses, the state of New Jersey had to step in and cover the costs. More than $253,000 was paid out by the New Jersey Uninsured Employer’s Fund.
Because of his failure to provide insurance for his employees, the owner of the company will face a maximum sentence of 18 months in a state prison and a criminal fine of $10,000.
