Work Injury Compensation

If you are an employee who has sustained an illness or injury related to your on-the-job duties, you may be entitled to an array of medical coverage and financial benefits. Depending on the nature and extent of your work injury, compensation could be awarded to you to help your family remain afloat financially while you recover. In most states, workers who have been injured on the job may be approved to have all of their medical treatment related to the injury covered by their employer, or by their employer's workers' compensation insurance company. In addition, if your injury or illness will require a lengthy absence from work to recover, you could be awarded temporary or permanent disability payments that are approximately two-thirds of your original salary, although the precise formula used to determine your compensation may vary in your jurisdiction. Furthermore, if your injury will make it difficult or impossible for you to return to work in your original role, you may qualify for a stipend to cover vocational training that will allow you to enter a new line of work. Check with the workers' compensation bureau in your state for more details about the benefits available to injured workers.

Fast Facts

  • In some cases, your workers' compensation case may be denied if you fail to provide notification of your injury within 30 days.
  • However, if you can prove that your employer knew about the injury via other sources, such as a co-worker, you may still be able to pursue a claim.
